In the Mirriam-Webster dictionary Proto is defined as - first in time, giving rise to, parent substance of a (specified) substance.

This series of paintings originally sprang from the pregnancy of my wife with our first child. They were my visual imaginings of the fetuses sensory experiences within the womb. As I continued to paint them, They became a study of The spatial relationships that the mind creates to structure and relate to the body's place in the world.

Special attention was paid to never clearly define any one things role in the environment. In this way, the paintings would always be about the space and its inhabitants relationships to one another first and foremost. Each piece became a Tabula Rasa wherein the viewer could project their own conceptions.
